Davud-i Khalwati of Mudurnu and Stylistic Forms in His Gulshen-i Tevhid u Tahkik
Davud-i Khalwati or Mudurni is a Sufi poet from Mudurnu who lived between the second half of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century. Mudurni was a sheikh of the Khalwati Sufi order. The Gulshen-i Tevhid u Tahkik, a work of his which has reached us, is a unique work in the mathnawi form. This mathnawi is a religious, mystical, and ethical text and was written in 913/1508. Even though it presents linguistic peculiarities of “Ancient Anatolian Turkish”, it also shows the characteristics of a “Transition Period” work, on the basis of the fact that it was composed during a period when Arabic and Persian words and phrases became more and more visible in literary works. The Gulshen-i Tevhid u Tahkik presents various examples of stylistic forms, such as giving advice, direct speech, story-telling, conversation and question-answer, attesta¬tions and proofs from the Quran, Hadith and other Islamic references.
